Working from home sounds like a dream, no commute, flexible hours, and the ability to work in socks. But once the novelty wears off, remote work can offer a different reality: distractions, awkward tech setups, and an odd sense of isolation that quietly chips away at your productivity.
Worth mentioning up front: If cold fingers and toes are your enemy, check out our guide on heating up a cold office space. It works just as well for home offices as well. In particular, you might try our desktop hand warmer. It's one of the most underrated comfort upgrades you can make. I’ll talk more about that at the end.
These items don’t just make your desk look more put together, they make work smoother, faster, and less frustrating.
Cable Management Box or Sleeve
Keeps your cords from turning into a tangled mess and helps keep your workspace tidy.
Desk Drawer Organiser or Catch-All Tray
Keeps essentials like pens, USB drives, and Post-its from scattering across your desk.
Whiteboard Desktop To-Do Pad (our preferred choice)
Great for keeping your daily plan visible without having to open another tab or creating endless sticky notes.
These are the digital workhorses, the gadgets that support your workflow and make everything a bit easier.
High-Speed USB Hub or Docking Station
Keeps all your accessories connected and cuts down on the constant plug-and-unplug shuffle.
Wireless Keyboard and Mouse Combo
Increases comfort, reduces clutter, and helps prevent wrist strain, especially over longer workdays.
Desk Lamp with Adjustable Colour Temperature
Lets you tailor your lighting to the time of day and screen brightness, helping reduce eye strain.
These essentials create the foundation for a productive, comfortable work-from-home setup. Once you've got these in place, adding more targeted tools, like those recommended in the rest of this post, becomes that much more effective.
According to a Beyond BookSmart study, 48.7% of remote workerscited interruptions as their top struggle. I can believe it. My “quick tea break” has turned into dishwashing more than once. Here's somethings I've used to keep me focused and distraction free.:
Apple AirMax Noise Cancelling Headphones
So...these aren't cheap. But they are worth it. I had a pair of Sony's flagship noise cancelling headphones and the build quality just wasn't there. The Apple headphones can feel a bit tight on the head but are basically a noise cancelling tank
Dreamegg D11 White Noise Machine
Instead of reacting to every noise, a white noise machine helps mask them altogether with a neutral soundscape, keeping your brain in focus mode. Some folks prefer the Dohm, but I found it to be toonoisy surprisingly enough.
INMOZATA Room Divider
This is great when you share an office with a significant other. This creates a visual boundary, which is surprisingly effective at reducing interruptions from others in the house, and even helps you mentally "enter work mode."
Personally, I’ve had entire afternoons disappear without ever finishing the one thing I sat down to do. It's very easy when working from home to have the lines blur a bit.
Ticktime Pomodoro Timer Cube
This timer uses the Pomodoro technique, structured work sprints with breaks, to prevent mental drift and keep your day on track.
In a remote work study from Buffer 23% of remote workers name loneliness as a key challenge. This is actually up from 19% back in 2019. While I can't say I feel it every day, especially around flu and cold season, when I do, it hits hard. I haven't tried the first, but the second and third, I have and I highly recommend them.
Recommended gear:
Hey Bracelet / Bond Touch
This is a wearable bands that send real-time vibrations or light pulses to a paired partner. It offers a subtle emotional connection throughout the day, like a virtual "poke" or hand-squeeze. While I haven't tried this out personally but the idea sounds really cool.
Divoom Planet-9 Mood Lamp
Lighting affects mood more than we give it credit for. This one’s customisable by app and adds ambient warmth to solo workdays.
If your workspace is already functional, it might be time to make it interesting. These gadgets blur the line between office tech, productivity tools, and conversation-starting desk ornaments.
Floating Bluetooth Speaker (That Kinda LooksLikethe Death Star)
Let's be honest. Does your Bluetooth speaker haveto float? No. It is cool and should you splurge to make it float? Absolutely.
Laser Projection Keyboard
Turn any flat surface into a virtual keyboard, not exactly practical, but undeniably cool for tech-loving desk setups.
These are the kinds of workspace upgrades that make remote work a little more delightful, or at the very least, great conversation starters on your next video call.

One thing Idid invest in? Aheated desk pad, and it made more of a difference than I expected.
